The Art of Recovery
With our society's obsession over productivity, it seems there's never enough time in a day. Unless we can completely redesign our lives, which is highly unlikely, we will continue to experience the weight of everything on our never-ending to-do list. Which is why so many of us feel chronically exhausted and end up getting burnt out.
Charlie Gilkey, Founder of Productive Flourishing, is someone who helps changemakers finish what matters most. He categorises the time we have in a week into the following four blocks:
/ Focus block – Higher level work that requires focus and creativity
/ Social block – Energetically in the space to meet others
/ Admin block – Lower-energy tasks
/ Recovery block – Activities that recharge us
Recovery block as one of the essential times that we MUST schedule in for ourselves! This was exciting and liberating.
“Most of us put the other three in the ‘productive and valuable’ bucket, but it’s the recovery blocks that allow us to do that work,” says Gilkey. And how right he is.
A walk in the sun, curling up with a book, tickling your pet, doing yoga, taking a nap, slowing down to care for your skin… If you had put aside any of those restorative activities to make more time for “important” work, well, think again. It’s those activities that fuel your body and soul - your life.
